More than 14,000 school going children have been displaced due to the ethnic violence in the north-eastern state of Manipur, news agency PTI reported the Education Ministry as saying. Union Minister of State Annapurna Devi was also reported saying in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that around 93% of these displaced students have been admitted to nearest schools. "A total of 14,763 school-going children have been displaced due to the current Manipur situation. A nodal officer has been appointed for each relief camp to facilitate the admission process of the displaced students," the union minister was further quoted as saying.
"93.5 per cent of the displaced students have been admitted to a nearest feasible school, free of cost", she further added. Notably, over 160 people have been killed and hundreds injured in the ethnic violence in Manipur which broke out following a Tribal Solidarity March in the hill district called against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
