Jharkhand Students' Union Calls For Bandh Against New 60:40 Recruitment Policy In Govt Jobs

The students' associations have called for the bandh due to the 60:40 recruitment policy, which opens 40 per cent reservations for all, while the students want 100 per cent reservation for locals.

The students union in Jharkhand has called for a 48-hour bandh in Ranchi against the state government’s revised recruitment policy. Jharkhand State Student Union (JSSU), an umbrella body of different students' associations, called the bandh against the new policy of '60:40' under which 60 percent of seats in state government jobs are reserved for aspirants from the state while the remaining 40 percent is open to all. The JSSU had called the bandh to demand 100 per cent reservation for local people in state government jobs.

In light of the bandh, the authorities have deployed police to maintain law and order and also to prevent any untoward incidents, according to ANI. The streets of Ranchi had lesser vehicles but the impact wasn’t much. Police are on stand-by around several barricades and most shops are closed due to the bandh. 

Ranchi City SP Shubhanshu Jain said that there is no impact of the bandh so far in Ranchi City. "Some 10 agitators were seen on bikes at the bus stand but everything is normal there. Transport and other activities are normal as usual in the city," the SP said.

Similar was the situation in other parts of the state. The impact of the bandh was negligible in the morning hours.

The students from these associations took to the streets early in the morning in the capital Ranchi to enforce the bandh.

According to a PTI report, the agitators had assembled at Ranchi’s Khadgara bus stand where they requested bus and auto-rickshaw operators not to ply their vehicles. However, local transport was plying as normal. In the morning, the vegetable markets on Kokar-Lalpur Road, Naga Baba Khatal, and other places were normal.

"This is morning time and we are visiting different places to request people’s support for the bandh... We hope the impact will be seen as the day progresses," JSSU leader Devendra Mahto told PTI.

Speaking on the policy, Mahto alleged that the government has opened the door for outsiders in Jharkhand government jobs, "which we cannot allow. So, we have called for a 48-hour Jharkhand bandh, beginning from June 10."

He further stated that the JSSU met with 72 MLAs including 42 from the ruling parties and 13 MPs to seek their support in this agitation. While they did speak against it, the advertisements for jobs are being issued on the basis of a 60-40 ratio.
