Background
Due to heavy rainfall and floods in several states across India, including Delhi, the authorities have taken necessary precautions to ensure the safety of students. In Delhi, all schools located near the Yamuna River were instructed to remain closed on July 17 and 18 due to the rising water level caused by the continuous rainfall.
As of the latest update, the water level in the Yamuna River has receded below the danger mark. Therefore, based on the Department of Education's (DoE) notice, schools in Delhi will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday, but they are expected to resume regular operations from Wednesday onwards.
Maharashtra is also experiencing heavy rainfall, and India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high alert for certain areas such as Raigad, Palghar, and Mumbai. Given the severity of the weather conditions and the potential risks posed by heavy rains, the Raigad District Collector Yogesh Mhase has taken the necessary precautionary measure of declaring a holiday for all schools and colleges in the district.
Chandrapur District Collector Vinay Gowda has also declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the district today in view of heavy rainfall.
The decision to declare a holiday aims to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff members, as heavy rainfall can lead to flooding and other hazards.
On Tuesday, Mumbai experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall, with an average recorded rainfall of 88.24mm. According to a scientist from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area is forming in the Bay of Bengal. This low-pressure system is expected to strengthen the offshore monsoon trough in the vicinity of Maharashtra.
It is anticipated that this system will move closer to the Maharashtra coast around July 18, leading to a revival of the monsoon in Mumbai and the adjacent areas of the Konkan district.
In light of the forecast and the developing weather system, the IMD has issued alerts for Palghar and Thane districts until July 20, indicating the possibility of adverse weather conditions during this period. Additionally, Raigad has been placed on an orange alert, indicating the expectation of heavy to very heavy rainfall, until July 21.
