Assam Cabinet Approves Reservation Of Medical College Seats For Bhutanese Nationals

Assam Cabinet's approval to the reservation of medical college seats for Bhutanese nationals comes a day before the Bhutan king's first visit to the state.

On the occasion of the visit by the King of Bhutan, the Assam Cabinet has approved the reservation of seats in medical colleges within the state for Bhutanese nationals, Chief Minister Office Assam tweeted. "Bharat and Bhutan share a unique relationship which has strengthened with the passage of time. For centuries, knowledge and education have been central to this special bond. Tomorrow, we in Assam, eagerly look forward to welcome His Majesty, the King of Bhutan on his first official visit to our State. This visit will further deepen the friendship between the two countries," Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a tweet.

Three MBBS seats exclusively sanctioned for Bhutanese students in two state medical colleges. During the meeting, presided over by the Chief Minister, it was decided that two seats will be reserved for Bhutanese students at the Nalbari Medical College Hospital and one seat at the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Barpeta, as confirmed by Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah during a statement to the press.

According to reports, the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, will be on a personal visit to Assam with family from November 3 to 5. During the trip, he is scheduled to visit the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati and the Kaziranga National Park. He will also participate in a cultural event hosted by the Assam government, reports said. Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and CM Sarma will be hosting dinners.

The cabinet has resolved to set the compensation at Rs 30 lakh to be paid to the state government in cases where graduates from all medical colleges within the state fail to fulfill the one-year rural service bond obligation.

The cabinet has also decided to distribute scooters to 35,755 students, which includes 30,209 girls with scores exceeding 60 percent and 5,566 boys with marks surpassing 75 percent in their higher secondary examinations. This distribution will take place on November 30.

In addition, a total of 27,183 students who have achieved scores of 75 percent and higher in the High School Leaving Examinations will each receive Rs 15,000 on November 29 as part of the government's initiatives to support and reward academic excellence.
