Manipur Education Minister Thounaojam Basantakumar Singh, on Thursday, said that out of the total 15,915 students who were staying in 347 relief camps, 15,641 students have been linked/re-admitted to nearby schools. Speaking to reporters, the Manipur minister further said that when violence erupted in the state on May 3, most of the schools across the state were shut for summer vacation, but in the wake of chaos across the state, the school vacations were further extended, considering the deteriorating law and order in the state.
He further underlined that while Classes 1 to 8 were reopened from July 5, higher classes resumed from August 10, and as of October 2023, schools recorded a 77 percent attendance.
"Classes from 1 to 8 reopened from July 5 while higher classes resumed from August 10," he said. In all, 26 schools - 18 in Churachandpur and three each in Imphal East and Jiribam districts, are yet to be reopened as they were being used as relief camps or for accommodating personnel of Central Armed Police Forces," Thounaojam was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
“The students have been admitted to nearby schools free of cost. Nodal officers have been appointed from the school education department to ensure free admissions and provide textbooks, notebooks, stationery items and uniforms,” he was further reported as saying on steps being taken for the welfare of displaced students.
He further said that displaced students have also been issued identity cards and the Board of Secondary Education of Manipur as well as the Manipur Council of Higher Secondary Education are working together to retrieve the documents and certificates of students that were destroyed during the violence.
"To cover 100 percent of the syllabus, winter vacations will be curtailed and Saturdays will be full-day classes. A new order will be issued in this connection soon," Thounaojam said further. He further informed that a dedicated education channel named ‘Lairik’ that is available on Jio Tv, is also providing free e-learning material to students.
The Manipur minister also informed that the Chief Minister College Students Rehabilitation Scheme 2023 has already been rolled out in the state, and the scheme is aimed at providing free admission to students. He also underlined that the state government has been actively considering the restoration of mobile and internet services in the state. The government is willing to restore mobile internet services within a couple of days. Inputs have been taken from security agencies too," he added.
