Woman Dies After Being Dragged By Metro As Sari Gets Stuck On Train Doors

The woman died after she came under a metro train at Delhi's Inderlok Metro Station when her saree got stuck between the doors.

A mother of two succumbed to her injuries after her sari got stuck on the doors of the metro train, following which she came under the train and was dragged for some distance. The incident happened on Saturday at the Inderlok Metro Station. It is still unclear whether the victim, Reena, 35, was boarding or disembarking the train at the time.

Anuj Dayal, Delhi Metro's Chief Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and the subsequent passing of the woman at Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday.

"An incident occurred at Inderlok Metro station on Thursday where it appears that a woman passenger's clothes got entangled in a train, resulting in injuries and her subsequent demise in the hospital on Saturday," said Anuj Dayal, Delhi Metro's Chief Public Relations Officer. The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety is set to conduct an inquiry to establish the details surrounding the incident.

Vicky, a relative of the deceased, recounted that Reena was travelling from Nangloi to Mohan Nagar in west Delhi when the accident happened during a train change at Inderlok Metro Station. Her saree got stuck, causing her to fall and sustain severe injuries as she was dragged along the platform for several metres, leading to her hospitalisation and, ultimately, her passing.

"When she reached Inderlok Metro Station and was changing trains, her saree got caught. She fell, sustaining serious injuries. She was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in critical condition. On Saturday evening, she passed away," he said.

According to IANS, after the incident, she was immediately rushed to Safdarjung Hospital and placed in the ICU ward of Neurosurgery. The neurosurgery department reported that she succumbed to severe head injuries and chest trauma at 4:20 PM on Saturday.

Delhi Police have requested the CCTV footage of the incident from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.

"If negligence is identified, a case will be registered," said a senior police officer.

Initial investigations suggest that the Metro door's sensor failed to detect the presence of the woman's clothing, leading to the accident. Reena, survived by a son and a daughter after losing her husband seven years ago, leaves behind a grieving family coping with this sudden and tragic loss.
