Kanjhawala Case Victim Cremated, Mother Wants All Five Accused To Be Hanged: Key Points
Kanjhawala Case: Anjali Singh, who was dragged under a car for 12 km, was cremated on Tuesday amid heavy security at Shiv Puri Muktidham in Delhi. Here are the top developments in the case so far.
Anjali Singh, the 23-year-old woman who was killed after being hit and dragged by a car on Delhi streets, was cremated on Tuesday. Anjali Singh died in the early hours of the New Year after her scooter was hit by a car, which dragged her for 12 kilometres — from Delhi's Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala.
Her body was found in the Kanjhawala area of Delhi. The five men who were believed to be in the car at the time of the incident have been charged with culpable homicide and other offenses. All five accused were placed in police custody for three days on Monday.
Here are the top developments so far in the Kanjhawala case:
- Anjali Singh's post-mortem report was submitted to the police on Tuesday. "The autopsy of the deceased woman was conducted at Maulana Azad Medical College. The report states the provisional cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to ante-mortem injury to head, spine, left femur, and both lower limbs," Sagar Preet Hooda, Special Commissioner of Police, Law & Order, Delhi, said.
- The autopsy report ruled out any sexual assault as initially claimed by Anjali's family, according to the Delhi Police. "All injuries occurred due to blunt force impact and possibly with a vehicular accident and dragging. Also, the report indicates that there is no injury suggestive of sexual assault," Hooda said.
- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for Anjali Singh's family. He also said the Delhi government would appoint the "best lawyer" to fight the case. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, too, ordered an inquiry into the Kanjhawala case.
- CCTV footage revealed that Anjali was with a friend at the time of the accident. The friend later recorded her statement with Delhi Police. Anjali and her friend, Nidhi, had gone to attend a New Year party at a hotel. A CCTV footage showed them exiting the establishment at 1.31 am on Monday.
- The CCTV footage shows Anjali fighting with another woman outside the hotel.
- Several media reports quoted the hotel owner as saying that the women were drunk and were fighting with other patrons. "Both of them were arguing. When the manager told them not to fight, they went downstairs and started fighting, after which both of them went away on a scooter," the owner said.
- Nidhi, too, said that Anjali was inebriated. "She was in a drunken state but insisted on driving the two-wheeler. After being hit by the car, she came under the car and got dragged with it. I got scared and ran away. I didn't tell anything to anyone," she was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
- Anjali Singh was cremated on Tuesday evening amid heavy security at Shiv Puri Muktidham in Delhi.
- Anjali's mother demanded capital punishment for all the accused. "We want all the five accused to be hanged. The public won't sit quietly just because my daughter has been cremated," she said,
