Delhi Police on Saturday announced intensified security measures in advance of the Diwali celebrations, emphasising increased police deployment in key markets and the implementation of anti-terror precautions.
Speaking on the matter, North Delhi DCP Manoj Kumar Meena stated: "During Diwali celebrations, we have increased the police deployment in the main markets. We have taken all the anti-terror measures. All the markets are being checked. We have put CCTV cameras in every market. We are keeping a check on the crowd through the drone cameras. We have increased police deployment in markets where crackers can be sold. Along with this, we are taking legal action on any information we are getting. People are aware of pollution," he can be seen saying in a video posted by ANI on X (formerly Twitter).
The Delhi Police also issued a preemptive advisory, cautioning the public about the anticipated surge in traffic during the festive season. The advisory highlighted specific areas prone to congestion, including popular shopping districts such as Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli, Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, and others.
"To avoid inconvenience, save time, fuel, and reduce pollution, the general public is advised to utilise the services of public transport like bus, metro, and carpool, etc. Connecting with the social media services of Delhi Traffic Police and traffic helpline will further help in planning a hassle-free travel accordingly," the advisory urged.
On Diwali eve, reports surfaced of massive traffic snarls in various parts of the national capital, notably in Ghazipur and Nangloi, as people flocked to markets for last-minute festivities. Ghazipur border experienced heavy congestion towards Ghaziabad, with commuters expressing frustration over prolonged delays. Some users on social media claimed that illegal encroachments by sellers in the Ghazipur flower market exacerbated the situation, causing significant inconvenience.
The traffic situation was already complicated by intermittent rain showers on Friday, adding to the difficulties for commuters navigating the bustling city during this holiday season.
