22-year-old student killed in Delhi University vicinity; cousin arrested for iron rod attack after marriage refusal. Safety concerns arise. Top points here.

A tragic incident unfolded near a Delhi University college in South Delhi on Friday, as a 22-year-old student was found dead at a park in Malviya Nagar, near Aurobindo College. Nargis, a Kamala Nehru College student, was brutally attacked with an iron rod by her own cousin, 28-year-old Irfan after she refused to marry him. The shocking murder has shocked the community and raised concerns about the national capital's safety.

Amidst the day's prominent news, the murder retains its position as one of the top stories, and here are the key points that provide a comprehensive and factual overview of the case thus far:

  1. A 22-year-old student named Nargis was found dead near a Delhi University college in South Delhi on Friday. She was a student at Kamala Nehru College.
  2. Nargis was allegedly murdered by her cousin Irfan, who beat her to death with an iron rod. Nargis' refusal to marry Irfan was the impetus for the heinous act.
  3. Nargis' body was discovered in a park near Aurobindo College in Malviya Nagar. The iron rod used in the crime was discovered near her body by the police.
  4. Irfan, a 28-year-old food delivery agent, surrendered to police shortly after committing the murder. He admitted to planning the murder three days before it was carried out.
  5. According to the PTI report, Irfan revealed during interrogation that he wanted to marry Nargis, but her family rejected the proposal, in part due to his lack of a proper job. Nargis, too, declined his proposal and ceased communicating with him.
  6. Irfan, fueled by rage and distress over the rejection, lured Nargis to the park as she returned from her stenography class and attacked her when she refused to speak to him, according to the report.
  7. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi), Chandan Chowdhury, Irfan's anger over the rejection of the marriage proposal drove him to commit the murder, the report said.
  8. The chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, expressed deep concern about the incident and questioned the accountability of the Delhi Police. She emphasised the city's rising rate of violence against women, ANI reported.
  9. Maliwal cited another recent incident in which a woman was shot in the Dabri area, emphasising the critical need for authorities to take action to ensure the safety of women in the national capital.
  10. The DCW has taken note of the incidents and has issued notices to the Delhi Police, urging them to address the rising number of crimes against women in the national capital, according to the report.
