MCD Ruckus: AAP's Sanjay Singh Says Mayor Shelly Oberoi's Car Was Attacked, Slams BJP

The AAP accused BJP of resorting to "hooliganism" because it was unable to process its defeat in the MCD mayoral polls.

New Delhi: After a ruckus in MCD House between AAP and BJP Councillors led to the adjournment of the House till Friday 10 am, the newly-elected Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi's car was attacked, said AAP senior leader Sanjay Singh. He further said, "I myself was stopped at three places. Mayor Shaili Oberoi's vehicle was attacked. There is limit to hooliganism. We are not going to be intimidated by your attacks and hooliganism. Mayor and deputy mayor have become ours." We are also committed to the Standing Committee."

On the other hand, regarding the mayoral election, he said, "they created ruckus for the first, second, third time. The Supreme Court ordered, after which Delhi got its mayor Shelly Oberoi. We got all the votes we had. We then Had also said that the mayor will be ours."

The AAP accused the BJP of resorting to "hooliganism" because it was unable to process its defeat in the MCD mayoral polls, which led to the MCD House being adjourned for the day on Thursday.

On Wednesday night, in the MCD House chamber, a number of members of both parties engaged in physical combat and hurled plastic bottles at one another. Mayor Shelly Oberoi was forced to reschedule the House until 10 a.m. on Friday because the chaos persisted on Thursday morning.

The AAP stated that members of the MCD panel are not prohibited from carrying mobile phones to the voting booth during the election. The BJP is protesting the mayor's decision to allow members to do so.

Oberoi claimed in a press conference held at the civic center that some BJP council members tore ballot papers and threw the ballot box during the standing committee election.

"It's shameful what the BJP councillors did. The ballot box was thrown, ballot papers were torn and I was attacked,” she said, adding that the BJP councillors gheraoed the well of the House and the proceedings had to be adjourned 13 times.

"The BJP resorted to unconstitutional behaviour in the house once again. It is the loss of the people of Delhi. BJP's Rekha Gupta and Amit Nagpal resorted to hooliganism in the house and we will take action against them,” she said.

She added that there isn't any law that says you can't use your phone to vote.

Sanjay Singh, a senior leader of the AAP, claimed that the BJP was engaging in "hooliganism" in the House and "not being able to accept their defeat" in the mayoral elections.

“When the BJP resorted to hooliganism, 47 votes were already cast for the standing committee. Election can never be conducted in this manner. What if the BJP resorts to hooliganism again after 100 votes and asks to consider them invalid?” Senior AAP leader Atishi said.

During the election to select the six members of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the mayor claimed that some BJP councillors attempted to attack her. On Wednesday night, a few BJP members claimed that some of their fellow party councillors were struck by objects thrown in the air.
