Delhi CM Kejriwal Visits Bhalswa Landfill Site, Claims 45 Tonnes Of Waste To Be Cleared By May 2024
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal visited the Bhalswa landfill and said that 45 tonnes of waste from that site will be removed by May 2024.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday visited the Bhalswa landfill site and said that around 45 lakh tonnes of waste from it is expected to be processed and reduced by May 2024. Kejriwal, while talking to the media at the site, said that once 45 lakh tonnes of waste gets reduced then 35 acres of land will be reclaimed which can then be reused in a number of ways. At present, there are three landfill sites in total in Delhi and they are located in Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur.
The Delhi Chief Minister said that the Bhalswa landfill site contains around 60-65 tonnes of municipal waste which is spread over 72 acres. Besides the legacy waste which has been stored there for years, 2,000 tonnes of fresh water waste is added to the massive dump on a daily basis. “The target till today was to reduce 14 lakh tonnes of waste (from it), but it is being done speedily and the target has been exceeded, with the figure being 18 lakh tonnes,” CM Kejriwal said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
He also said that the target for the agency which is working on the waste processing at the Bhalswa landfill site is to reduce waste by 30 lakh tonnes and the deadline which has been set by it for the task completion is May 15, 2024.
Kejriwal gave an update on the work done on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, "As per the target, we had to remove 14 lakh tonnes of garbage from here till date, till now we have removed 18 lakh tonnes of garbage. According to the target, we have to remove 30 lakh tonnes of garbage by May 2024, whereas by then we will remove 45 lakh tonnes of garbage. With its removal, 35 acres of land will become free."

“But, given the speed of work, about 45 lakh tonne waste is expected to be reduced by May 15 next year," he stated.
On the other hand, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva visited the Ghazipur landfill site and accused CM Kejriwal of lying.
"We are saying everything on the basis of numbers. Since Arvind Kejriwal's Nagar Nigam has come to Delhi, a new mountain of garbage has been formed in the past 8 months. Arvind Kejriwal is lying that they are reducing the size of the Ghazipur landfill," he remarked, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Plan To Clear Remaining Waste
Another agency will be hired to process the balance of waste. The initial work for the same has been completed but the tendering process has been stalled as the process has to get through Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) standing committee.
CM Kejriwal said that the MCD panel for this work will be formed according to the directions of the Supreme Court. He added that the Delhi government is trying to find an alternative solution.
The Delhi Chief Minister also said that he will be visiting the other two landfill sites very soon.
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, Leader of House in MCD, Mukesh Goyal and AAP's MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak accompanied Kejriwal during the visit, reported PTI.
