DCW Chief Swati Maliwal has issued summons to Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police claiming that the identity of the minor wrestler who accused WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh of sexual harassment has been revealed. The DCW in its notice said a video which was cirulation on social media showed a person who claimed to be the uncle of the minor wrestler, thereby revealing her identity - an offence under the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The women's panel body has demanded that the issue be dealt with seriously.
The panel has sought the copy of an FIR registered against the accused person for revealing the minor's identity along with his details and if not arrested, the panel has asked police to provide reasons for the same. The panel has also asked for the inquiry report probing whether Brij Bhushan is linked to the act of revealing the identity of the minor and a detailed report of action taken in the matter.
The DCW said, "The Delhi Commission for Women Act, 1994 mandates the Commission to investigate and examine all matters relating to safeguard provided for women under the Constitution and give recommendations to the Government on the issue of women safety and Section 10 of the Act empowers the Commission to seek any information from any office for the aforesaid purpose and gives it power of a Civil Court in this regard."
The Delhi Police on Wednesday said it has not found sufficient evidence on the basis of which they can arrest Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, reported PTI. The police said they have not found concrete evidence to prove women wrestlers' allegations of sexual harassment against Singh. They also said that the sections of POCSO in the FIR have a punishment of less than seven years and hence immediate arrest cannot be made by them.
According to PTI, a senior officer said that the police will submit a report in court within 15 days. The development comes a day after wrestlers reached Haridwar to immerse their medals in Ganga but were later stopped by the Khap leaders.
"During the investigation so far, the police have not found sufficient evidence to arrest the WFI chief. There is also no supportive evidence to prove their (wrestlers) claim. A report will be submitted in court within 15 days which could be in the form of a charge sheet or final report," the officer was quoted as saying by PTI.
According to some Delhi police sources, the officials have recorded statements of many witnesses and received many documents. The sources have said that neither he is influencing the witness nor he is destroying the evidence so arresting him is not possible in this case at all.
