New Delhi: Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said that party leaders on Tuesday flagged off video vans to tour the city. The vans will visit the city's seven Lok Sabha constituencies, aiming to make people aware of the importance of introducing the services bill in Parliament, reported news agency PTI.
The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) Amendment Bill, 2023, commonly known as the services bill, was passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha earlier this month during the Monsoon Session. It became an Act following presidential assent.
The Bill was tabled to replace an ordinance that was promulgated by the Centre on May 19. The Centre had brought the ordinance a week after the Supreme Court handed over the control of services in Delhi, excluding police, public order and land, to the elected government.
The Act establishes the Centre's control over the services matters, including transfer and posting of officers, in the Delhi government.
Sachdeva told PTI that the mobile video vans will visit all the Assembly seats in the Lok Sabha segments to explain to the people why it was necessary to bring the services bill.
The mobile vans will also show videos of BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in Parliament and outside defending the services Bill and explaining its need, party leaders said.
BJP MPs from Delhi Harsh Vardhan, Ramesh Bidhuri and Parvesh Verma, and the in-charge of the state unit Baijayant Panda were also present in the flag-off programme.
The primary focus of the Act is to clarify the powers and authority of the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi and the elected government led by the Chief Minister of Delhi.
It seeks to emphasize the role of the LG in matters related to the police, public order, and land, while also asserting that the Delhi government must seek the opinion of the LG before taking any executive action based on decisions made by the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
