AAP Govt Gives Clearance To New Maintenance Shed For Vande Bharat Trains In Delhi
Aam Aadmi Party government in the national capital has allowed the construction of a new maintenance shed for Vande Bharat trains in Delhi.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government in the national capital has allowed the construction of a new maintenance shed for Vande Bharat trains in Delhi. CM Kejriwal has approved a proposal allowing the removal and transplantation of trees to clear land for the construction of the project. A new train shed will be built in Shakurbasti. At least 70 trees will be transplanted and eight trees will be removed from the site, which will be replaced by 780 new ones.
According to an official statement, the government received a proposal from the Railways for removing and transplanting 78 trees to clear the construction site. Kejriwal has approved the proposal in the national interest. The Railways has proposed to set up a train shed in Shakur Basti. However, certain patches of trees were obstructing the construction of the site, the statement read.
It had written to the Environment and Forests Department of the Delhi government seeking approval for the removal of eight trees and transplantation of 70 trees to clear the site, the CMO added.
"The Railways critically need modern infrastructure. This approval will help the nation get better facilities. We are actively ensuring that modern developments do not adversely impact Delhi and are mandating 10x compensatory plantation for any tree that gets affected," the statement said.
The Vande Bharat Express project, also known as Train 18, is a major part of India’s Make In India campaign. Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and designed by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation, the state-of-the-art electric multiple unit (EMU) trains come with cutting-edge technology, offering features like regenerative braking, automatic doors, and improved energy efficiency.
The trains also showcase India's commitment towards sustainable transportation, with the project envisioned as part of the government’s ‘Mission Electrification’ initiative launched in 2014, which aimed to electrify the entire rail network. Targetting 100% implementation of the mission by 2024, the Indian Railways aims to become the largest 'Green Railway Network' in the world.
On June 27, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off five Vande Bharat Express trains in one go, taking the total number of such trains to 23. With schedules and routes identical to the Shatabdi Express, the Vande Bharat trains could gradually replace the latter, according to reports.
The Vande Bharat Express is touted to be India's fastest train, and they aim to reduce journey time by 25% to 45%, according to the Ministry of Railways. Initially designed to run at 160 kilometres per hour (kmph), it can now run up to a maximum speed of 180 kmph after an upgrade. Commercial operations of the train are, however, capped at 130 kmph, and even that speed cannot be achieved all the time. The railway networks are now being upgraded across India to enable these trains to achieve their full speed potential.
On August 15, 2021, in his address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi announced that 75 Vande Bharat trains would connect every corner of the country during the 75 weeks of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. While 23 Vande Bharat trains have been launched so far, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her Union Budget 2022-23 speech that as many as 400 new-generation Vande Bharat trains would be manufactured over the next three years.
