Maharashtra: Teen Driver Without Licence Drags Cop On Car's Bonnet For 1.5 Km For Trying To Stop Him

A teenaged driver hit a cop and dragged him for 1.5 km in Maharashtra's Vasai when the latter tried to stop him for a routine check.

A traffic police constable in Vasai in the Palghar district in Maharashtra on Sunday evening was dragged for nearly 1.5 kilometres on the bonnet of a car that was being driven by a teenager.
The cop who was on duty at a busy junction in the town sustained multiple injuries in the incident. According to a senior inspector at the Manickpur police station, the constable had spotted a car with Uttar Pradesh registration jumping a traffic signal and stopped the driver, a 19-year-old man, to question him. Later, it turned out that the accused did not have a driving licence.

However, as the constable was speaking with the driver, the latter suddenly accelerated the car and hit the policeman, causing him to fall on the car's bonnet and be dragged for approximately 1.5 kilometres. The car eventually came to a halt due to a traffic snarl and bystanders quickly apprehended the driver and handed him over to the police.

The driver was arrested and charged with several offences, including attempt to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from carrying out his duties, and violations of the Motor Vehicles Act.

In a similar incident earlier this month, a traffic head constable was dragged on the bonnet of a car when he signal the vehicle to stop in the Prem Bali Pul area of Shalimar Bagh, Delhi.

Police said that the constable found an approaching car suspicious and tried to stop the vehicle. However, the driver did not stop and hit him instead. As he fell on the bonnet, he held onto the wiper as the car plied on. He fell on the ground when the car driver hit the brakes after dragging him for a few metres, reported The Indian Express.

The car tried to flee the spot after that. However, it was chased down by an officer on a motorbike for half an hour and all the occupants were nabbed. It turned out that there were four of them, including the driver, and all were juveniles.
