Birthday celebrations took a tragic turn last week when an 18-year-old man was killed, allegedly by four of his friends, two of whom were minors, after an argument over splitting a Rs 10,000 food bill in suburban Govandi, news agency PTI reported citing a police official on Monday. Two of the accused, aged 19 and 22, from Uttar Pradesh, were apprehended in Gujarat, while the minor boys surrendered to police and were later detained, the official added.


As per information provided by a Shivaji Nagar police official, the victim organised a birthday party on May 31 at a roadside eatery known as a 'dhaba.' The total bill for the food consumed during the celebration amounted to approximately Rs 10,000.

Reportedly, a disagreement arose among the victim and his friends regarding the division of the bill. However, the victim resolved the matter by paying the entire amount from his own pocket, the official stated.


Later on, the four accused organised another birthday party and invited their friends. According to the police official, after presenting him with a cake, they viciously attacked the victim with sharp weapons, ultimately causing his death.

Following the incident's publicity, the two underage suspects, both 17 years old, surrendered to the police. Meanwhile, their adult accomplices were captured by the Mumbai Crime Branch on June 2 in Ahmedabad while attempting to flee to their hometown of Gonda in Uttar Pradesh.


As mentioned by the official, the minor boys were sent to a correctional facility, while the other two accused were arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 302 (murder). The investigation into the case is underway.
