New Delhi: Naxalites on Monday fired around 20 rounds on two policemen in Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon district, police said. Head constable Rajesh Singh and his companion Anil Kumar Samrat were attacked by the unknown Naxalites between Chandsuraj and Bortalav. According to ANI, Rajesh Singh died on the spot and his companion was taken to the hospital for treatment.

 

Later, Rajnandgaon Superintendent of Police Abhishek Meena informed that both jawans were killed in the attack.




"Unknown Naxalites fired around 20 rounds on Head constable Rajesh Singh & his companion b/w Chandsuraj & Bortalav. During this, Rajesh Singh died on spot & his companion is under treatment. Teams of ITBP and District Force is investigating on the spot," ANI tweeted.


Later, in an update, ANI wrote, "Both the jawans being fired upon by Naxals, killed: SP Rajnandgaon Abhishek Meena."




According to sources, Bortalab, which is on the Rajnandgaon and Maharashtra border, was set up by the Rajnandgaon police to stop illegal liquor smuggling. 


According to PTI, the incident took place between 7 am and 8 am under Bortalav police station limits in the district adjoining Maharashtra, when the two personnel were going on a motorcycle, SP Meena said.


A group of armed Naxalites fired at them. One of the personnel died on the spot and the other one succumbed to injuries while being taken to a hospital, the official said.


He further stated that the Naxalites also set ablaze their motorcycle before escaping from the spot, located 180 km from the state capital Raipur.



A search operation is underway in the area, he added.
