A woman in the Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh was allegedly beaten to death on Sunday by her husband for not fulfilling his demand for a bike and Rs 3 lakh in dowry.

Sundar, a resident of Baikheda village, had been married to Meena for two years. He had been demanding dowry, including a TVS Apache bike, since their marriage, often harassing her over it, according to her father.

According to NDTV, Meena had reportedly been staying at her parents' home in Soharka since Rakshabandhan. Sundar would visit her daily and even have meals with her family. On Sunday night, he took her back to his home, where he allegedly confronted her again about the dowry. He then allegedly assaulted her with sticks, and strangulated her, and then fled.

Woman Beaten To Death by Husband, In-laws In UP

A similar incident was reported from Uttar Pradesh on April 2, where a woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband and in-laws near Noida after failing to meet their dowry demands, which included a Toyota Fortuner and cash, police reported. Her husband and father-in-law were arrested in connection with the incident.

The victim, identified as Karishma, married Vikas in December 2022. The couple lived in Kheda Chauganpur village, within the Ecotech 3 police station's jurisdiction, according to news agency PTI.

Karishma’s brother Deepak filed a police complaint saying her in-laws were pressuring her for more dowry, including the SUV.

"On March 29, we were informed that the accused demanded additional dowry, and when the demand was not met, Karishma was tortured and beaten to death," a police official said.

An FIR has been registered under IPC sections 498A (cruelty to a married woman), 304B (dowry death), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
