Five people, including a 10-year-old child, narrow escape on Sunday after the cab they were travelling in overturned after being hit by a BMW on Bandra-Worli Sea-Link. The BMW was allegedly racing with a Mercedes. Mumbai police have reportedly arrested the drivers of both BMW and Mercedes vehicles on charges of attempted culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

As per several media reports, the two luxury cars lost control while speeding on the sea link around 10:20 am and hit the Wagon R. Nobody sustained any serious injuries in the incident.

The accident took place near pillar number 19 of the northbound stretch of the Bandra-Worli Sea Bridge. A family of four, including a couple, their 10-year-old son and an elderly woman, were travelling to Bandra in a cab driven by one Nisar Ahmed.

While the cab was going on the left side of the road, the Mercedes and BMW cars came at high speed from behind. When they came near the cab, the luxury vehicles collided and the BMW hit the cab, the police said. The speed limit on the sea link is 80 kmph.

“Due to the impact of the collision, the cab overturned after hitting railings next to the road and then on the divider on the right side of the road,” Indian Express reported quoting a police source.

After the accident, Mercedes driver Shahbaz Khan (31) and BMW driver Tariq Chaudhary (29) were taken into custody by the Worli police. As per the IE report, both men work in a private company and the vehicles involved in the accident were registered in the name of their companies.

They were reportedly arrested on the charges of attempted culpable homicide of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and sections of Motors Vehicle Act for rash and negligent driving.
