An unconventional love story has grabbed the attention of social media after a woman underwent gender change surgery to marry her lover in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district.

Shivangi, also known as Ranu, was born a woman but fell in love with Jyoti, 25, according to a PTI report.

Their first meeting dates back to 2020, when Jyoti, owner of a beauty parlour, visited the jewellery shop owned by Shivangi's family. Jyoti had come to purchase jewellery, marking the beginning of their acquaintance.

Later, Jyoti opened a beauty parlour at Shivangi's home.

Over time, their friendship cemented further, eventually blossoming into love, and they finally decided to tie the knot with the consent of their families.

Since both were women, Shivangi decided to change her gender. She researched the entire process online and consulted a specialist doctor in Delhi, said a family member.

Shivangi underwent three surgeries for the transition, the family member said, adding that one final procedure is yet to happen but Shivangi has already started living her life as a man.

She also changed her name before the marriage to reflect her new identity.

Families of the couple have been fully supportive of their decision and participated in the wedding, a relative said. Photos and videos of the wedding have been widely shared on social media with people expressing their diverse opinion on the subject.
