UP Court Admits Plea Against Asaduddin Owaisi Over 'Pro-Palestine' Slogan In Parliament, Issues Summon For January 7

A court in Bareilly on Tuesday allowed a petition filed by lawyer Virendra Gupta and issued a notice to Owaisi asking him to appear before the court on January 7.

In fresh trouble for AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, a local court in UP has asked the Hyderabad MP to appear before it over a plea claiming that Owaisi violated the Constitution by raising a slogan hailing Palestine in Parliament.

A court in Bareilly on Tuesday allowed a petition filed by lawyer Virendra Gupta and issued a notice to Owaisi asking him to appear before the court on January 7.

Lawyer Virendra Gupta filed a petition against Owaisi over the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader voicing support for Palestine during his oath-taking ceremony in Parliament.

Gupta said in his plea that the five-time MP had violated constitutional and legal beliefs.

He told reporters on Tuesday that a petition was filed in the MP/MLA court on July 12 but it was rejected. Gupta then filed a revision petition in the court of the district judge.

District Judge Sudhir allowed the petition and issued a notice to Owaisi on Saturday, asking him to appear before the court on January 7.

Gupta said he was hurt by Owaisi's slogan. His slogan was against the Constitution, he added.

Asaduddin Owaisi, while taking oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha on June 25, concluded his oath saying 'Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine'.

The Lok Sabha chairman had later ordered the remarks to be expunged from the Parliament records after it triggered an uproar from the treasury benches.

The AIMIM leader, who was elected from the Hyderabad seat for his fifth term, took oath in Urdu. He also recited a prayer before taking oath.

Owaisi had justified his slogan after he came out of the House and told reporters there was nothing wrong in him saying Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine.
