UP News: A 13-year-old girl died by self-immolation a day after she was allegedly gang-raped at a sugarcane field in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, police said on Wednesday.
According to an FIR lodged by victim's father, the incident took place at the village in the Bhojipura area in Bareilly on Monday, as reported by news agency PTI.
The victim's father told the police that his daughter had gone to the field to dry clothes when two men -- Ankit and Pankaj -- allegedly caught her, dragged her to a sugarcane field and gang-raped her.
The accused fled after the girl's sister reached there on hearing her screams, according to the FIR. According to PTI, the father further told the police that his daughter immolated herself on Tuesday and was rushed to a hospital but she could not be saved.
Speaking on the matter, Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Mukesh Chandra Mishra said that an FIR has been registered in the matter and one accused has been arrested while hunt is on to nab the other. The body of the girl has been sent for a postmortem. The girl was a student of Class 8. A detailed probe has been started, Mishra added.
TMC Corners BJP-Led UP Govt
Amid the protests by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar hospital, the TMC on Thursday cornered the saffron party over alleged gang-rape in Bareilly.
Citing the Bareilly case, the TMC said that atrocities against women are going unchecked in "Double Engine states". The Mamata Banerjee-led party slammed the Yogi Adityanath led-UP government and said, "Where are the calls for resignation?".
In a post on X, the TMC said, "While @BJP4India is busy digging up dirt in Bengal, atrocities against women are going unchecked in Double Engine states. A 13- year-old girl in UP's Bareilly was driven to take her own life a day after she was gang-raped. Where is the outrage? Where are the calls for CM @myogiadityanath 's resignation? For BJP, political expediency always trumps Nari Suraksha!".
Abhishek Banerjee Cites NCRB Data To Attack UP Govt
TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Mamata Banerjee slammed the saffron party for "double standards" when it came to dealing with sexual abuse cases. Abhishek cited data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to highlight that UP had the maximum number of cases of crimes against women in India.
Speaking at a TMC Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day event in the Mayo Road area in Kolkata, Abhishek Banerjee said, "UP is followed by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. UP registered 41,733 cases of crimes against women in the last 10 years. MP recorded 36,144 such cases; Rajasthan and Maharashtra saw nearly 28,000 and 25,000 cases, respectively".
Taking a jibe at the BJP's "double-engine" government pitch, Abhishek Banerjee said CMs of all the four states should resign before the BJP demands Mamata Banerjee's resignation. Mamata Banerjee, too, said that crimes against women had increased in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. She said that no one, not even PM Narendra Modi, had resigned when women and girls of these states were being sexually abused.
