RG Kar News Today: The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case seems to be getting murkier by the day with barely any noticeable movement in the investigation. So far only one accused has been arrested and even his role in the crime is under scrutiny. Amid all grey, a bribery angle has now come forth, which is making the Kolkata doctor's death case even more confusing.
On August 9, a junior doctor had been raped and murdered on the premises of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident caused widespread outrage and sparked protests across India. The protests in Bengal are still continuing with intense action by citizens, especially doctors, seeking action.
The parents of the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder victim have now claimed that the police tried to offer them money. In a late-evening media briefing on Wednesday, September 4, the victim's parents claimed that Kolkata Police's DC North offered money to them even before the victim's cremation. "When my daughter's body was brought home, the DC North took me aside and offered me money. I gave him whatever reply I had to at that time."
The BJP cited the claim, interpreted as a bribery allegation, to target Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. "Mamata Banerjee, you need to answer these questions. You will not be spared if you keep mum," BJP's Asansol South MLA Agnimitra Paul said.
BJP's national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said: "Why did DC North offer a bribe to the victim’s father when her body was lying still in her house? Who was being shielded?" He alleged that Mamata Banerjee was not trying to ensure justice for the victim. Rather she was only shielding the culprits.
Counter To The Bribery Claim In RG Kar Case: Another Video
However, as soon as the news of the claim spread, a counter-claim video went viral. In the second video, two persons, purportedly the parents, with their faces blurred out to protect the identity of the victim, deny the "bribery claim". In the undated video, the parents say: "Who said this [offered bribe]? We never said anything like that. Nothing like this happened. This is a lie. We only want justice. They are lying for their vested interests."
TMC's Bengal general secretary of the social media wing, Nilanjan Das cited this video and said: "The victim’s parents have CATEGORICALLY DENIED the BASELESS CLAIMS of being bribed by the Police and State Administration."
Both the videos have been massively viral on social media.
A similar claim of the parents being offered money to "settle the matter" was made earlier as well. An X user, identifying as Dr Aratrika Ganguly, had then said that the money was not bribe and was actually compensation as per the Supreme Court's guidelines. She also shared the statement with the demands of the RG Kar MCH Resident Doctors' Association, where the body sought "adequate compensation" for the victim's family.
