A teacher in the Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh was suspended on Thursday after a video surfaced purportedly showing him cutting off a student's braid while he was drunk. The incident ironically took place on the same day as the Teachers' Day celebrations across the state.

The teacher has been identified as Veer Singh Maida who has reportedly gone on leave since the incident came to light.

A video circulating on social media shows the teacher, with a pair of scissors in his hand, while a girl standing beside him, crying. The incident took place on Wednesday at the Semalkheda government school in Semalkheda village, Ratoti tehsil.

As per the report of Haribhoomi, the drunken teacher gave a shocking punishment to a fifth standard girl for not studying, taking a pair of scissors and cutting off her braid. Despite the girl's continuous crying and pleading, the teacher ignored her completely.

Investigation Launched

Upon hearing the cries of the girl, a nearby resident rushed to the school and found the teacher, Veer Singh, cutting the student's hair. When the man tried to intervene, Veer Singh justified his actions by saying, "These students don’t study." As the man began recording the incident on his phone, the teacher dismissed the threat, saying, "Make as many videos as you want; nothing will happen."

According to ETV Bharat, following the incident, Ranjana Singh, the Assistant Commissioner of the Tribal Welfare Department, suspended the teacher and ordered an investigation. An investigative team, including the cluster principal, visited the school to look into the matter. Officials have recorded statements and spoken to the students about the teacher's conduct.

The department has not yet confirmed the authenticity of the viral video. In the suspension order issued on Thursday, the teacher is accused of behaving inappropriately with a student and using abusive language.
