Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: As the investigation continues in the RG Kar college rape and murder case, the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations of financial irregularities in the college from 2021 to the present.


The decision comes amid countrywide protests against the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at the state-run hospital on August 9. The SIT will be headed by Inspector General of Police Pranav Kumar, India Today reported, citing an official statement.


Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Tuesday heard the suo motu case related to the incident. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, which had taken cognisance of the incident, said that the case has shocked the conscience of the nation and expressed concern over her pictures and names being circulated on social media. 


During the hearing, the apex court proposed setting up of a National Task Force to evolve a national consensus on crating safe conditions of work for medical professionals in India.

  1. The SIT formed by the West Bengal government comprises three more police officials besides IGP Kumar, namely Waquar Reza, DIG of Murshidabad Range, Soma Das Mitra, DIG of CID, and Indira Mukherjee, DCP of Kolkata Police, as per the India Today report.

  2. Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police has registered a case against Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and others under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 120B, and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.

  3. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will interrogate Sandip Ghosh again today. The former principal was interrogated for 14 hours yesterday. Ghosh will be interrogated for the fifth day today. So far, 53 hours of interrogation has been done in last four days.

  4. The responsibility of the investigation into the rape and murder case has been handed over to two of the CBI's top women officers, according to an NDTV report.

  5. The two officers of the central probe agency have handled a few such cases earlier. The overall charge belongs to Sampat Meena, a 1994 batch IPS officer from Jharkhand who handled the Hathras rape-murder case and the Unnao rape case. Besides her, Officer Seema Pahuja, who was also part of the Hathras probe team, has also joined the case probe.
