Dengue In Bihar: As State Records Highest Single-Day Rise In Patients, Patna Takes Steps To Curb Cases

Dengue is surging in Bihar, with over 1,300 cases so far. Two deaths have occurred at NMCH this season. It has set up a 50-bed ward, while PMCH and IGIMS have also allocated beds for dengue patients.

Bihar Dengue News: Dengue is on the rise in Bihar and its capital Patna is gearing up to deal with the increase in the number of patients. Bihar recorded 98 cases on Wednesday — the highest single-day patient figure. Of these, 44 patients were from Patna, which has reported 614 cases across the district this season. The total number of dengue cases in Bihar has surpassed 1,300, according to a TOI report. In 2023, 74 fatalities were recorded in Bihar, according to data from the National Vector Borne Disease Control.

So far, two patients have died of dengue in two months at the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH). At present, 18 patients are still admitted. A teenager died in August, while a woman died of dengue this month. However, better arrangements have been made for dengue patients at NMCH in Patna, the administration claimed. An ABP team visited NMCH to take stock of the situation and this is what it found.

50 Beds Reserved For Dengue Patients At NMCH Patna

A separate ward has been set up for dengue patients at NMCH with 50 beds. NMCH superintendent Dr Vinod Kumar Singh said that all facilities are available at NMCH for dengue prevention. Twenty beds have been reserved for women, 20 for men, and 10 for children. He said that the ward is not at capacity at present. Seven women, eight men, and three children suffering from dengue are currently admitted for treatment. 

The hospital administration said a total of 57 patients have been admitted to NMCH so far this season. Out of these, two patients have died. A 17-year-old patient died on August 29 and on September 8, an elderly woman passed away. The hospital superintendent said that there are ample arrangements for dengue patients at NMCH. All beds have mosquito nets and proper cleaning and medicine facilities. If any medicine goes out of stock, it is immediately ordered.

Further, NMCH superintendent Vinod Kumar Singh said that sometimes medicines are sourced from private entities, but patients are not charged a single penny.

Dengue Treatment Arrangements In Patna

The Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) has also made arrangements for dengue patients. Eight beds have been installed here. According to reports, five patients have died of dengue at PMCH from July till now. Separate beds have also been demarcated for dengue patients at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) as well.
