Delhi Police Special Cell team has arrested a shooter who is believed to be a member of the Tillu Tajpuriya gang. The shooter was taken into custody after an encounter on Wednesday night in Delhi's Rohini area.
The arrested accused was shot in the leg while he was trying to escape. He is said to have been involved in the Mundka murder case where a man was shot dead by assailants in the city's outer area.
On November 10, a 26-year-old man Amit Lakra was shot dead in Mundka. Delhi Police said that the victim was attacked by two bike-borne miscreants who fired six rounds of bullets before fleeing the spot. Lakra had come out on bail a few days before the incident. He used to work for people associated with the Gogi gang and was arrested in a robbery case.
After the incident, Tillu Tajpuriya gang had claimed responsibility for the murder of Amit Lakra. Since then, the Special Branch of Delhi Police had been searching for the members of this gang.
On Wednesday night, the Special Cell received tip off that one of the accused was spotted in Rohini, following which a team rushed to the spot and laid a trap to nab the shooter. When he was surrounded, he tried to escape, but ended up getting shot in the leg.
The rivarly between the Gogi and Tajpuriya gangs dates back to 2010 when both of them were friends and fell out during a student union election. Over the years, the rivalry has claimed several lives. Even though the leaders of both the gangs have died, their members have carried out attacks at each other in the last few years.
Gogi was gunned down inside Rohini court on 2020, and it was alleged that Tajpuriya gang was involved in its planning. After two years in August 2023, Tajpuriya was stabbed to death inside Tihar jail, which was allegedly done by Gogi gang members.
