Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 40-year-old man on Wednesday climbed a high-voltage electric pole in Delhi's Yamuna Khadar area, demanding prompt action by the government on environmental issues. The incident was reported to the Geeta Colony Police Station.
The police promptly arrived at the scene upon receiving the information. Although he initially refused to cooperate, he was safely brought down by the police and Delhi Fire Service personnel and handed over to the police after being rescued.
The man, identified as Madhusudan Biswas, was found to be mentally unstable during the police probe. A police official told news agency PTI that a psychiatrist has been called in for consultations. According to the police, the man said that he is either from Bengal or Bihar and claimed to be a teacher and even an environmental acitvist.
According to Delhi Fire Service ADO Yashwant Singh Meena, the man insisted on speaking with the Chief Minister Atishi, Prime Minister Modi, and the Chief Justice Chandrachud regarding enviornment conservation.
"At 10:30 am, we received a call about a man who had climbed a high-tension wire pillar. He was demanding to speak with the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister, and the Chief Justice regarding environmental conservation. It is unclear where he is from, as he has been giving conflicting information," Delhi Fire Service ADO Meena said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said Biswas claimed to have had sent multiple emails to government officials demanding proactive measures on environmental issues, but had not received any response. "In frustration, he climbed the pole, insisting that he would only come down if he was allowed to meet the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Defence Minister, and a judge," PTI quoted the DCP as saying.
The investigation into the matter is underway. Biswa is also currently undergoing a medical examination as the police is assessing his mental condition to determine if he requires specialised care. The police officer said that they have not yet found a proof which supports his claim of him being a teacher or an environmental activist.
