Two medical staff members at a hospital in Delhi were abused and attacked allegedly by a patient and his attendant, just days after doctors resumed work following an 11-day nationwide strike against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

The incident took place late Saturday night at Doctor Hedgewar Hospital in the city's Karkardooma area while the doctor was providing critical care, the doctor who was assaulted told PTI.

"Late Saturday night, around 1:00 am, a patient with a forehead injury was brought to the hospital. I took him to the dressing room to stitch the wound. After I finished the first stitch and was working on the second, the patient suddenly pushed me and began hurling abuses," said the doctor.

His son, who was outside the room also came in and slapped the doctor and the medical dresser and they both started hurling abuses, said the doctor, adding that the patient was in an inebriated state.

Following an appeal by the Supreme Court and assurances by the government to address their concerns, hundreds of resident doctors in Dehli on August 23, ended a strike that had crippled OPD and non-emergency medical services.

Massive outrage and protests had erupted among the medical fraternity after the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Doctors and other medical services workers had called a strike to demand justice for the victim and the passing of legislation ensuring the safety of doctors and medical staff at the workplace.

The police arrested Sanjoy Roy as the main accused in the case and the investigation into the matter is being carried out by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Former Principal at RG Kar College, Sandip Ghosh is also under the scanner of the CBI.
