The Bihar Police has ordered a crackdown on public playing of "vulgar" and "double-meaning" Bhojpuri songs. Calling it a "burning social problem", the Bihar Police said such vulgar songs are not only embarrassing for the women to hear, but have a "perversive effect" on the psyche of children.
A circular issued by the state Police Headquarters was sent to all Inspector Generals (IGs), Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) and the railway police, directing them to take action against those playing such songs at public spaces, including events, buses, trucks, and auto-rickshaws.
Police To Take Strict Action Against Those Found Playing Vulgar Songs
The circular, which was issued on Friday, said that those found guilty will be booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita.
"A special drive must be carried out across the state to identify those who indulge in such activities and promote vulgar and double-meaning Bhojpuri songs," it said.
"It becomes embarrassing for women when they hear such vulgar and double-meaning Bhojpuri songs at public places, functions, buses, trucks and auto rickshaws," it noted, highlighting concerns about the impact of these songs.
The Bihar Police directive also pointed out that such songs create an unsafe enviornment as women feel insecure when they hear such songs being played around them. "Sometimes they feel insecure also when such songs are played. Strict action should be taken against those who are caught violating the directive in this regard," it added.
The issue was earlier raked up in the Bihar Assembly as well. It was raised by Congress MLA Pratima Kumari in the Assembly around two years ago, demanding police action against those found promoting vulgar Bhojpuri songs.
The legislators were assured by the state government that strict action would be taken against those who promote "obscene and double meaning" Bhojpuri songs in films and on social media.
