Khagaria's District Magistrate Amit Kumar Pandey told news agency PTI that a slab of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge collapsed around 8 am. "I must tell one thing the entire structure of the under-construction bridge, which is faulty, is supposed to be dismantled by the contractor. The construction work has already been stopped there. The contractor is dismantling the structure at the direction of the Patna High Court," he said.
The official added that no casualty was reported in the incident.
This is the third time that the Agwani Sultanganj four-lane bridge has collapsed. Earlier, on April 30, 2022, pillar number five fell. Again in May last year, the superstructure of pillar numbers 9-12 on the Agwani end collapsed. The construction of the bridge began in 2015, according to media reports.
The bridge has been under construction for nearly 11 years with an estimated cost of Rs1,710 crore. This adds to the slew of bridges that have collapsed in Bihar over the last few months, raising questions over the quality of construction.
On reports of the collapse of the Sultanganj Aguwani bridge, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said, "When the bridge collapsed for the first time, it was decided that the bridge should be rebuilt after breaking it...When our government was in power a committee was constituted to investigate the cause of the collapse and based on its findings action was to be taken...Under the rule of Nitish Kumar, bridges and mega bridges are collapsing. Many such kinds of incidents are coming forward. Action should be taken against those responsible...The report of the committee is very important...No one believes now whether the bridge will be built or not...I don't believe that a review meeting has been done by the government till now in the case of bridge collapse..."
