The man suspected of killing a 26-year-old woman and stuffing her chopped body parts in a refrigerator in Bengaluru was allegedly in a relationship with the woman, said police officers involved in the investigation of the matter.

The 31-year-old man allegedly stabbed the woman, Mahalakshmi, on the suspicion that she was involved with another man, said a Bengaluru police official, reported Hindustan Times.

The accused, who later died by suicide, had confessed to his brother, who is one of the three people detained by the police in connection with the matter.

Mahalakshmi and the suspect worked at the same shopping mall and had been friends since last year when the woman moved to Bengaluru after conflicts with her husband. The two started seeing each other in late 2023, said the officer.

Relations between the two, however, started turning sour after the man suspected Mahalakhsmi of being involved with another man.

Confession To Mother

Hours before he committed suicide, Muktirajan Pratap Ray, the prime accused in the case confessed to his mother that he murdered a woman in Bengaluru, reported the Indian Express. Ray was found hanging from a tree in Bhuinpur village in Odisha’s Bhadrak district after being on the run following Mahalakshmi's murder.

The accused's mother said that he came home at around 10 pm on Tuesday. “He looked tense, so I asked him why, and he said that he had committed a mistake. When I pressed him, he said he had murdered a woman in Bengaluru, where he was staying to earn a living,” the woman said.

She further said that she asked the reason behind his act to which he said that the victim had taken money and a gold chain from him. “He said he committed the crime a fortnight back,” said the mother on Thursday.

The woman also claimed that her son was threatened by a group of youths at the woman's behest. “He then went to the woman’s house where they had a scuffle. My son said he choked her to death,” she claimed

“I was speechless after he narrated the incident. He then slept. Around 4 am, he said he was leaving as he did not want the family to be affected by the police investigation. He had a glass of water and left,” she said.
