Tesla Lays Off 200 Autopilot Employees In Recent Cuts; Closes California Office: Report
Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently had outlined plans to cut 10 per cent of salaried staff, however, he said he would be increasing hourly jobs
US-based electric carmaker Tesla has reportedly shown exit door to about 200 workers from its Autopilot team, citing media reports news agency IANS reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, Tesla has also closed an office in California. Bloomberg, citing sources privy to the information, said the majority of those who were let go were hourly workers.
As recently as last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had outlined plans to cut 10 per cent of salaried staff, however, he said he would be increasing hourly jobs. The laying off of salaried employees in Tesla started after Musk's announcement that would result in reducing Tesla's total headcount by about 3.5 per cent.
A report mentioned that Tesla employs more than 1,00,000 people across its facilities. In a LinkedIn post, Iain Abshier had said that he had "a gut punch" that he would be included in the Tesla layoffs after just two weeks of work.
Another fired Tesla employee Robert Belovodskij wrote that he was notified that the offer he signed to come back to Tesla full-time has been "rescinded due to the current hiring freeze and 10 per cent workforce reduction".
Meanwhile, Musk, who had his first internal meeting with Twitter employees last week, shared with them his plans and ideas to “improve” the platform and its business operations.
The billionaire businessman is set to buy the microblogging platform for $44 billion, though he has hinted that a lower price could not be ruled out and sought more details from the company about its fake accounts.
According to media reports, Musk told Twitter at the meeting held over a video call hinted at job cuts if the company’s financial condition warranted such a measure and also said that he doesn’t want its content to be “boring”.
