The two key equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, on Tuesday snapped their 3-day winning run and closed in the red due to persistent selling in some key index heavyweights. The S&P BSE Sensex, which hit a low of 72,363, finally closed 362 points lower at 72,470. On the other hand, the NSE Nifty 50 declined to a low of 21,948, while finally settling at 22,005, down 92 points.


On the 30-share Sensex platform, PowerGrid, Airtel, Wipro, HDFC Bank, Kotak Bank, UltraCemco were among the losers. On the flip side, Bajaj Finance, L&T, NTPC, Axis Bank, Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank emerged gainers.






In the broader market, the BSE Midcap finished with a gain of 0.7 per cent, while the SmallCap index closed flat, down 0.1 per cent.


Sectorally, IT index, Bank index closed lower, while oil & gas index advanced.


In the previous session on Monday, the stock markets remained closed on account of Holi.
