Bank holiday on May 1: Banks in several states across India will observe a holiday on May 1 in recognition of Maharashtra Day and Labour Day. Maharashtra Day commemorates the establishment of the state of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960, when it was formed by reorganising states based on linguistic lines.
Additionally, in some states, banks will be closed to mark May Day, also known as Labour Day. This day is dedicated to celebrating the contributions and achievements of workers, as well as the ongoing efforts to improve working conditions, secure fair wages, and advocate for social justice.
In many countries, including India, May 1 is observed as Labour Day or International Workers' Day. Therefore, banks in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Manipur, Kerala, West Bengal, Goa, and Bihar will be closed on May 1.
City-wise list
According to the Reserve Bank of India's holiday calendar, banks in cities such as Thiruvananthapuram, Patna, Panaji, Nagpur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, Imphal, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, and Belapur will remain closed on May 1 for either Maharashtra Day or Labour Day.
In India, Labour Day is celebrated differently across various states, with each region using its own name for the occasion. In Hindi, it is called Kamgar Din; in Kannada, Karmikara Dinacharane; in Telugu, Karmika Dinotsavam; in Marathi, Kamgar Divas; in Tamil, Uzhaipalar Dhinam; in Malayalam, Thozhilaali Dinam; and in Bengali, Shromik Dibosh.
Bank holidays in India are governed by the State Government, Central Government, and Union Territories Act of 1881. The Reserve Bank of India publishes a yearly bank holiday calendar, which all banks across the country adhere to.
