Stock Market News Today: The two key equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, on Tuesday pared their early gains amid volatility and settled with marginal gains. The S&P BSE Sensex closed 89 points up at 73,738. On the other hand, the NSE Nifty50 closed at 22,368, up 32 points.
Stock update
On the 30-share Sensex platform, Bharti Airtel jumped 3.38 per cent, followed by Nestle, Maruti, HCLTech, Tata Motors, Asian Paints. On the down side, Sun Pharma, Reliance, M&M, TechM, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel emerged losers.
In the broader markets, the BSE Midcap index gained 0.52 per cent, while the BSE Smallcap index advanced 1 per cent.
Sectoral update
Sectorally, Nifty Realty index rose 2.6 per cent, followed by Nifty FMCG index rising 0.76 per cent. On the downside, Nifty Pharma index slipped 0.96 per cent.
In the previous session on Monday, the BSE benchmark jumped 560 points to close at 73,648, while the NSE Nifty50 jumped 189 points to settle at 22,336.
Global market updates
In Asian markets, Tokyo and Hong Kong settled in the positive territory while Seoul and Shanghai ended lower. European markets were trading with gains. Wall Street ended in positive territory on Monday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.41 per cent to $87.36 a barrel.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,915.23 crore on Monday after a day's breather, according to exchange data.
Rupee rises 3 paise
Meanwhile, the Indin currency appreciated by 3 paise to close at 83.33 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday on positive domestic markets and a soft American currency. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.37 against the greenback. The unit hit an intra-day high of 83.28 and a low of 83.39 against the greenback.
The domestic unit finally settled at 83.33 (provisional) against the dollar, 3 paise higher from its previous close. On Monday, the rupee appreciated by 8 paise to close at 83.36 against the US dollar.
