According to a study by the Union of Concerned Scientists, electric vehicles produce fewer emissions over their lifetime in comparison to conventional vehicles, even when accounting for the emissions associated with battery production. This is because EVs produce zero emissions during operation, and as the electricity grid becomes greener with the integration of renewable energy sources, the emissions associated with charging EVs decrease further. Also, according to a research by the European Energy Agency, even with electricity generation, the carbon emissions of an electric car are around 17–30 per cent lower than driving a petrol or diesel car. Resultanly, transitioning to electric vehicles offers a tangible pathway to reducing our carbon footprint and mitigating climate change.


Recognising the importance of electric vehicles in promoting sustainability, governments and organisations around the world have implemented various policies and initiatives to accelerate their adoption. Countries such as Norway and the Netherlands have introduced ambitious targets to phase out the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles in the coming years. The European Union has also set stringent emissions standards, incentivizing the adoption of electric vehicles through subsidies, tax breaks, and improved charging infrastructure.


In India, the government has implemented the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, particularly two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The scheme provides financial incentives to consumers and support for charging infrastructure development. Additionally, several states in India, such as Delhi and Maharashtra, have introduced policies to exempt EVs from certain taxes and registration fees, further incentivising their adoption.


The benefits of electric vehicles extend beyond environmental considerations. EVs offer lower operating costs and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. According to a report published recently, the total cost of ownership for electric vehicles is projected to become lower than that of conventional vehicles by the mid-2020s. Moreover, the adoption of electric vehicles presents an opportunity for job creation and technological advancement, as the manufacturing and maintenance of EVs require specialised skills and expertise.


The global shift towards electric vehicles is already underway. In 2020, despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, global sales of electric vehicles reached a record high of 3.2 million, representing a 43 per cent increase compared to the previous year. The adoption of electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers in countries which are focusing on sustainability has increased significantly.


The adoption of electric vehicles represents a significant step towards achieving a greener and more sustainable future. Conventional automobiles have since very long been a major contributor to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating the global environmental crisis. In such a situation, the emergence of electric vehicles offers a promising solution by significantly reducing or even eliminating tailpipe emissions during operation.


While concerns regarding the environmental impact of EV battery production exist, studies have consistently shown that the lifetime emissions of electric vehicles are significantly lower compared to gasoline-powered cars. As the electricity grid becomes increasingly powered by renewable energy sources, the emissions associated with charging EVs will continue to decrease. This, coupled with the implementation of supportive policies and incentives, has propelled the global shift towards electric vehicles.


In addition to their positive environmental impact, electric vehicles offer economic advantages, such as lower operating costs and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. The growth of the EV industry also presents opportunities for job creation and technological innovation, driving economic development in the process.
