Dell Technologies has announced a major change to its work policy for global sales team employees. According to an internal memo, starting September 30, staff who can work from company offices will be required to do so five days a week, according to a report from Bloomberg citing familiar sources.
This decision is intended to create a more collaborative environment and improve skill development among the sales team. The memo highlighted the significance of in-person work, stating, “Working remotely should be the exception rather than the routine,” according to Bloomberg.
According to the report, field representatives are expected to spend five days a week equally between customer and partner interactions and in the office accounting. This change represents an increase from the previous requirement of three days in the office.
However, the company has made accommodations for specific employees, stating, “Remote sales team members who can't go into a Dell office should continue to work remotely,” according to Bloomberg. Dell has also assured that more information about the arrangements for remote workers will be provided soon.
In August, Dell announced a major restructuring of its sales division, which includes layoffs, as part of its strategy to streamline operations and prioritise artificial intelligence. An internal memo sent to staff on August 6 indicated that the company plans to consolidate its sales teams and create a new unit focused on AI, as reported by Business Insider.
While Dell has not revealed the exact number of employees affected, estimates suggest that around 12,500 workers—approximately 10 per cent of the company's total workforce—may be impacted, according to Newsbyte.
Dell's decision aligns with a broader trend among tech companies reassessing their remote work policies established during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many firms have adopted hybrid models, some are advocating for a stronger office presence. Similarly, e-commerce giant Amazon recently announced plans to require employees to work from company offices five days a week starting next year, a shift from their previous three-day requirement.
