Maserati is known for making stylish cars and in recent times they have entirely changed their product portfolio. We have seen the Granturismo recently and also the Grecale SUV here along with a larger dealership network across more cities. For Maserati, the Grecale is their most important new product which is a luxury SUV slotting above the Rs 1 cr space. Size wise it is below the Levante but packs in more tech and style we think. Named after a north-easterly Mediterranean wind, the Grecale looks fast standing still and the gorgeous looks is pretty much half the reason why buyers would fork out the crore and a half for this. No doubt, it is one of the best looking SUVs around and that goes with its styling which isn't trying too hard but uses the classic beautiful lines which a Maserati is all about. There are voluptuous curves, a long bonnet and the grille with the large trident logo along with the slim headlamps.

The car here is the Modena version with extra black detailing which we think adds to the appeal and so does the huge 21-inch wheels with red brake calipers. The rear is somewhat more conventional though but size wise it is bigger than its rivals. Inside, the interior is lovely as well with proper metal, leather and crisp detailing. There is a digital clock now while there are two screens below along with a nice digital driver display too but some more physical buttons would have been nice. You have loads of options but everything is here including heated/cooled seats/ heated steering wheel, ADAS, panoramic sunroof etc The powered sports seats are plus and supportive while it gets all the toys which you expect.

The surprise is the rear seat with the amount of legroom on offer but it is more of a comfy four seater thanks to a large central tunnel. Push the start button on the steering wheel and the engine breathes to life while being much louder than what you think. It is a turbo four cylinder petrol with 330bhp but sounds more like an angry V6. Use those beautiful long steering paddles and you know this SUV is about driving.

At low speeds, the Grecale sitting on these 21 inch wheels is a bit on the stiff side but is not uncomfortable at all. Plus it quietens down and in comfort mode is refined, easy to drive and goes over bad roads very well. It is a proper luxury SUV. However, use the Sport mode and it becomes harder plus the noise gets louder. The engine is charismatic and sounds so good on the go with a tuned but proper soundtrack. The steering is fast and direct while there is some body roll, it is controlled. The engine feels quick enough and has plenty to make you smile while if you want more, there is the Trofeo version too with more than 500 bhp.

In short, the Grecale ticks a lot of boxes in being the perfect performance luxury SUV but it will cost you more than rivals at Rs 1.5 cr for this spec. However, Maserati has always been about standing out from the usual luxury cars and this time, the Grecale does that well.
