Buddha Purnima: Those who are planning to visit bank on Wednesday should note that banks will remain shut in many parts of the country on account of Buddha Purnima, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar. Such holidays are declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Bank holidays might vary from state to state and specific to region.


This month banks were closed for almost 12 days including the second and fourth Saturdays apart from all Sundays.

As per the apex bank guidelines, all private and public sector banks across the country remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. The banks are also shut on Sundays. Hence, banks will remain shut on May 30 as it is Sunday.


Which regions will observe bank holiday on account of Buddha Pournima?


Banks will remain closed today in Agartala, Belapur, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar. 


While the bank branches will remain closed, but mobile and internet banking will be functional as usual. Buddha Purnima is observed to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. Buddhists and Hindus all over the world will observe the day with full zest. Buddha was born as Siddhartha Gautama, a prince, on the Purnima Tithi, the full moon day in the 563 B.C. in Lumbini (a region in modern day Nepal).
