Six airbags being mandated for the Indian automobile market has been a big topic of discussion and Hyundai is the first mass-market OEM to offer them as standard across all variants and models. This is indeed a big step and something we feel should be followed by all manufacturers. Hyundai already offered six airbags standard on many of its models but now all of them offer it including the Nios, Aura, and the Venue which earlier offered four as standard.
While the Government has not made it mandatory for six airbags to be fitted to its cars, it is slowly becoming common practise in most cars to offer six airbags as standard with only a few mass-market budget cars not offering six airbags due to cost. For small cars which are price-sensitive, the inclusion of six airbags as standard will move the price up. Plus some small cars need to be significantly re-engineered as well.

However, if Hyundai India has done it with six airbags standard in all of its cars, others should also do the same. Other safety features offered by Hyundai as standard include three-point seat belts for all seats plus seat belt reminder. Hyundai also offers Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on nearly all of its models plus Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
While airbags alone are not the only constituent of safety being a passive safety measure with other factors like the body shell being also taken into consideration, it is indeed an important factor.
With most compact SUVs barring some having six airbags as standard, the sub 10 lakh space is the segment where six airbags being standard would be difficult to give but Hyundai India has shown that it is possible.
