New Delhi: Good news for those who frequently visit Delhi by road, not only get relief from Delhi's heavy traffic jams, but you will also pay less toll tax! The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has opted for a special method for this.

A new technology Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) database has been linked with Fastag and has mandated the entry of commercial vehicles with RFID tags at all 124 toll points of Delhi from September 1, 2021

What is RFID?
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation will charge commercial vehicle operators a lower toll tax. Commercial vehicles now have to buy a different type of chip on Delhi's borders.

According to South Delhi Municipal Corporation, this will be implemented at the Badarpur border entry point first. At present, there are two toll collection systems just a few meters away. One belongs to a municipal corporation and the other one belongs to the National Highway Authority of India. There is a demand to link the two together.

RFID systems installed at 13 locations

According to the corporation, with the current system in place, there are frequent traffic jams. There are a total of 124 border points in Delhi where these vehicles have to pay toll tax. Out of these, RFID systems have now been installed at 13 major locations. This makes about 85 percent of the commercial vehicles traffic in Delhi. The cost of integration at a border point comes to at least Rs 1 to 1.5 crore.

Commercial vehicles mostly enter from Badarpur

The highest number of commercial vehicles in Delhi enter from Badarpur and Rajokri boarders. Commercial vehicles coming from Haryana, especially from Faridabad, have to pay toll tax twice and that is why the integration will be done first. This will be followed by the integration of Rajokri.

While the project was earlier being carried out under the supervision of the Environment Pollution Control Authority, the Commission for Air Quality Management is now working under NCR.
