Bhai Dooj 2023: Bhai Dooj is a festival that symbolises unbreakable love, sacred relationships, and the bond of trust. It falls on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik month, which is Wednesday, November 15, 2023. On this day, there is also the presence of Atigand and Parakram Yoga, and it is also known as Yam Dwitiya.


On this day, sisters apply tilak on the foreheads of their brothers, expressing their wishes for their brothers' health and longevity. Brothers, in turn, visit their sisters' homes and share a meal together.


The Story of the First Bhai Dooj (Bhai Dooj Katha):


On the day of Bhai Dooj, Yamuna, the daughter of the Sun, was the first to feed her brother Yama and apply tilak to him. Hence, this festival is also known as 'Yam Dwitiya.' It marks the end of the five main festivals and the conclusion of the Deepotsav. If someone forgets to light the Yam Deep on Dhanteras, it can be lit on Bhai Dooj. In the evening, light nine lamps and pray to the planets for their blessings, asking them to illuminate every aspect of life like this light.


Bhai Dooj 2023 Muhurat (Bhai Dooj 2023 Timings):


This year, the auspicious time for Bhai Dooj is from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM in the morning and from 5:15 PM to 6:15 PM in the evening. Celebrating the festival between these timings is considered ideal.


Bhai Dooj Puja Vidhi (Rituals of Bhai Dooj Puja):



  • Sit facing the correct direction while applying tilak. Sisters should sit facing east, and brothers should sit facing north.

  • To ensure the health and longevity of the brother, sisters should gift a green-colored handkerchief or cloth on this day.

  • In the cloth, put three handfuls of green gram, one cardamom, one clove, five Gomti Chakras, and a little Durva grass. Tie three knots in the cloth and then wave it over your brother's head seven times.

  • After waving, place the cloth in the northeast corner of your home and worship Ganga as Yamuna, Yami as Yamaraj, and Subhadra as Krishna. Pray for the well-being and prosperity of your brother while chanting the mantra 11 or 21 times.

  • Finally, place the cloth in a pot and bury it near a peepal tree.

  • Remember not to wear black clothes on this day.

  • Before applying tilak to the brother, sisters should not eat. Instead, have a meal together after the tilak ceremony.
