New Delhi: Akshaya Tritiya will be observed on Saturday, April 22, this year. The occasion is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Tritiya, which falls in the month of Vaisakh. The word 'Akshay Tritiya' is derived from Akshay- which means never-diminishing, and Tritiya- which is derived from Shukla Paksha Tritiya.
It is believed that performing Pitra-Tarpan or Dan-Punya on this day is beneficial and interestingly, it is one of the three days in the year when one does not need to contemplate the Shubh Muhurat to undertake any auspicious activity. This is because the day is free of any malevolent influences.
On this day, worshippers rise early in the morning and perform puja after having a bath. They present Lord Vishnu with yellow robes, incense sticks, sandalwood paste, basil leaves, and flowers.
Importance of Akshaya Tritiya:
According to Hindu mythology, the Treta Yuga began on Akshaya Tritiya day. Akshaya Tritiya and Parashurama Jayanti (6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu) often coincide. However, in rare situations, Parashurama Jayanti may happen on a day before Akshaya Tritiya.
On this particular day, while Hindus honour Lord Vishnu, Jain devotees pray to Lord Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankara, who is said to have completed his one-year austerity on this day by drinking sugarcane juice poured into his cupped hands. As a result, people who perform Varshi-tap, a year-long alternate day of fasting, complete their tapasya on this day by sipping sugarcane juice.
