Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced on Tuesday in Kurnool that if Congress party wins the 2024 general election, it will grant special category status to Andhra Pradesh. The former minister asserted that Rahul Gandhi had stated that the AP Special Category Status will be approved as soon as Congress forms a government at the Centre with public support.

Ahead of party MP Rahul Gandhi’s 95-km "Bharat Jodo Yatra" in Andhra Pradesh, the Congress leaders along with party workers inspected the arrangements in Kurnool.

He stated that former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu had argued in favour of granting Andhra Pradesh special category status for 10 years in the Parliament but he was unable to persuade his promises by granting special status.

Jairam Ramesh said that the Polavaram Multi-purpose Project was made a crucial component of the Bifurcation Act, and when it is finished, it will be in the credit of the Congress Party to have accomplished such a project.

He also urged the people of Andhra Pradesh to organise their own Bharat Jodo Yatras and join the one departing from Karnataka.

He said Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra has travelled 62 km through Tamil Nadu, 355 km through Kerala, and 66 km in Karnataka thus far in 26 days. After travelling through Andhra Pradesh from Aluru to Mantralayam, the Yatra will re-enter Karnataka and spend 21 days there. It will travel 3,570 kilometres in 150 days, spending 4 days in Andhra Pradesh and 13 days in Telangana.

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Sake Saiajanath and AP Congress party working president N Tulasi Reddy were also present during the inspection.
