An unauthorised passenger on Tirupati–Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express was seen smoking inside a toilet which triggered a false fire alarm on Wednesday evening. The incident happened in coach C – 13 on Train No. 20702 after passing Gudur, said a railway official, as per news agency PTI. Videos that surfaced on social media showed the C – 13 coach engulfed with a smoke-like extinguisher while the train halted for some time after the alarm went off.

"An unauthorised passenger boarded the train from Tirupati and locked himself in the toilet of C-13 coach... The passenger smoked inside the toilet which resulted in automatic activation of aerosol fire extinguisher present inside the toilet," an official from South Central Railway (SCR) Zone's Vijayawada Division informed in a press release, as per PTI.

The aerosol fire extinguisher began emitting powder-like smoke to douse the flame after the false alarm went off leading to the passengers in the coach becoming panicked.

The videos that surfaced on social media showed shattered window panes as well as panicked passengers on the train while the aerosol fire extinguisher was sprayed.

After this, the passenger relayed the information to the train's guard through an emergency phone connection inside the coach, leading to the train being stopped at Manubolu around 5 pm.

The Railway police mistook the false alarm to be a fire accident and rushed to the coach with a fire extinguisher. The toilet's window was broken to save the passenger who was found smoking inside it.

The man was detained by Railway police at Nellore for appropriate action as per the Railway Act, the official said, as per PTI. The train later resumed its journey.
