Andhra Pradesh: A 39-year-old traveller from Kenya tested positive for Omicron variant of Coronavirus, making it the second confirmed case in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, a top health official said.


According to officials, a 39-year-old foreign traveller, who had come to Chennai airport on December 10, has been found positive for Omicron.


She reached Tirupati by car and was tested on reaching there. After she was found to be Covid positive on December 12, her sample was sent to CCMB, Hyderabad for genome sequencing and the result was declared as Omicron positive on Wednesday, said health officials.


She is well and in institutional quarantine under the observation of the health authorities, the officials informed. Six of her family members were also tested for Covid and found to be negative for the virus.


According to officials with the Andhra Pradesh Health Department, this is the state's second case of Omicron. So far, 45 international travellers and nine of their contacts have tested positive for Covid-19 through RT-PCR, and all the samples have been forwarded to the CCMB in Hyderabad for genome sequencing.


In the wake of the new Covid variant, the health department urged the public not to panic or trust rumours and take safeguards such as social distancing, wearing of mask, and regularly washing hands.


Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh reported 95 new Covid-19 cases and one death in the Krishna district over the last 24 hours. 27,233 tests were performed in the period. The total fatality count due to the pandemic has risen to 14,481. A total of 20,60,061 patients have recovered in the state so far. The active caseload in the state stands at 1,432.
