Shanghai [China] Feb 2 (ANI): The Shanghai minivan accident that occurred on Friday morning outside a Starbucks outlet leaving at least 18 people injured, was an "accident" and not an "attack."

The Shanghai police said that they believe the crash was accident and not an attack, adding that the driver was smoking while transporting gas tanks, Fox News reported.

The driver has been identified by police as a 40-year-old man surnamed Chen.

The incident occurred in the city's Huangpu District. Three of the injuries were reported as critical, the People's Daily said.

Witnesses said the van was ablaze before mounting the pavement and crashing into a fence in front of the cafe about 9am, the local media reported, adding that the vehicle was carrying six people.

The Shanghai government has confirmed on its official Weibo account that the fire in the minivan had been put out.

All of the injured were rushed to hospital for treatment, it read.

The cause of the accident is not known immediately.(ANI)
