Michigan [USA], Mar 03 (ANI): A 19-year-old student believed to have fatally shot his parents at Central Michigan University on Friday, sparking a lockdown and a day-long police search, has been arrested.

The suspect, identified as James Eric Davis Jr, was accused of killing his parents by shooting them at a dormitory on campus in what authorities said was a family-related domestic dispute, CNN reported.

"CMU President George E. Ross thanks the campus and surrounding community and many law enforcement personnel who came together to keep each other safe and apprehend the suspect," a statement by the university read.

The victims were identified as James Eric Davis Sr, 48, and Diva Jeenen Davis, 47.

"The family is in shock and trying to piece everything together," a relative of the family told CNN.

The victims were from Bellwood, Chicago, where James Davis Sr was a part-time police officer for 20 years, assisting the department on special occasions.

"He was always there when you asked for him to be there," Bellwood Police Chief Jiminez Allen said.

This incident comes at a time when gun control policies have come under intense scrutiny, with citizens demanding more stringent laws and procedures to acquire a gun, following the recent mass-shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 people dead.
