Samajwadi Party patriarch and former Union Minister Mulayam Singh passed away on October 10, 2022, after a prolonged illness.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and other senior leaders of the party paid tributes to the veteran leader.

Mulayam Singh Yadav was conferred the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in April this year.

Mulayam Singh Yadav was groomed by prominent leaders such as Raj Narain and Ram Manohar Lohia.

A 10-time MLA and seven-term MP, Mulayam served as Chief Minister of UP thrice.

Yadav was first elected as MLA in 1967 from Jaswantnagar. Ten years later, he became a minister for first time.

During Indira Gandhi's imposition of Emergency, he was arrested and kept in custody for 19 months.

He founded Samajwadi Party in 1992. It was one of the several parties that emerged when Janata Dal fragmented into several parties.

Mulayam Singh Yadav became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1989.

He first entered Lok Sabha in 1996, when he won from Mainpuri. Later, he was elected to the Lower House six more times.

Mulayam Singh Yadav or 'Netaji' will always be remembered for his politics of secularism, socialism and social justice.
